Judgment

From Knowledge Management to Judgment Management

The successor to knowledge management is not a better repository. It is a shift in what the organization treats as the asset worth keeping.

Knowledge management asked: how do we store what people know? Judgment management asks a harder question: how do we preserve how people reason? The first treats the organization as a library. The second treats it as a mind.

The distinction is not academic. A library grows by accession — more books, more shelves. A mind grows by revision — better models, sharper distinctions, updated beliefs. An organization that only accessions becomes a bigger library that no one reads. An organization that revises becomes wiser.

The first treats the organization as a library. The second treats it as a mind.

Judgment management requires capturing the reasoning behind decisions, the evidence it rested on, and the confidence attached to it — and then treating that record as something to be tested against outcomes and improved. It is the operational expression of the idea that judgment, not knowledge, is what compounds.
